About THERMOPINE WOOD

Thermopine Wood (Thermally Modified Pine)

Thermopine is pine wood that has been thermally modified (heat-treated) at high temperatures (usually 180220C) in a controlled, oxygen-limited environment. The process improves durability, stability, and resistance to moisture without using chemicals.

It is commonly made from species such as Scots Pine and other softwoods.

1 Manufacturing Process (Thermal Modification)

  1. High-Temperature Heating Wood is heated to 180220C.

  2. Steam Protection Steam prevents burning and cracking.

  3. Moisture Removal Reduces moisture content to 47%.

  4. Structural Change Hemicellulose breaks down, reducing woods ability to absorb water.

  5. Cooling & Conditioning Wood is stabilized to usable moisture levels.

2 Technical Specifications

Property Typical Value
Density 450550 kg/m
Moisture Content 47%
Durability Class Class 23 (Moderately durable)
Thermal Conductivity Lower than untreated pine
Dimensional Stability 4050% more stable than untreated pine
Swelling Reduction Up to 5060% less
Color Dark brown (throughout thickness)
Resin Content Significantly reduced

3 Physical Characteristics

  • Rich dark brown color (similar to tropical hardwood)

  • Uniform color throughout

  • Smooth texture

  • Improved stability

  • Lightweight compared to hardwood

  • Slightly brittle compared to untreated pine

  • Pleasant mild burnt-wood smell initially

4 Advantages

High resistance to moisture
Better resistance to rot and fungi
Eco-friendly (chemical-free)
Improved dimensional stability
Lightweight
Attractive appearance
Good insulation properties

5 Limitations

Slightly reduced bending strength
More brittle than untreated pine
Surface can fade to silver-grey outdoors (unless treated with oil)
Higher cost than regular pine

6 Common Uses of Thermopine

Exterior Applications

  • Cladding & faade panels

  • Decking

  • Garden fencing

  • Outdoor furniture

Interior Applications

  • Wall paneling

  • Ceiling boards

  • Wet areas

  • Coastal environments

7 Sizes & Forms Available

  • Decking boards (1928 mm thickness)

  • Cladding profiles (T&G, shiplap)

  • Planed boards

  • Beams & battens

  • Custom-milled profiles

8 Maintenance

  • Apply UV-protective oil for exterior use

  • Clean annually

  • Re-oil every 12 years if exposed outdoors

Without treatment, it will naturally weather to a grey patina.
